The Yoke Is On Us

Emilee Seymour and Shawn Harris are Oxen. Beyond the hindrance of hooves, they have managed to create many works of art; the body of which is represented by a small sample below.

Oh man! I totally didn't know you did the cover art for Zebrahead! and your band's own cover art! that's awesome.
I saw you guys when you played at Tremont in Charlotte NC. you owned some serious face.
and even though my organs failed and caused my dreams to fail me, and that song hits a bit too close to home for me; The Matches will still always be in my top five favourite bands (maybe because that song is such a bittersweet irony?)

You should get a deviant art account so people can buy prints of your work, or just add you and admire your work ^.^

After thinking 5 minutes of a new big adjective for all these, I still didn't come up with one.
All of your art is ...indescribable.

I was guessing the Little Maggots video was going to be good, but wow, that's amazing!
Very breathtaken if I may say so.
I can't wait to see it.

Your art and music makes me want to make things. lol. Inspirational, I guess you could say, but at times also seductively limiting. Perhaps someday, I'll stop making crows. lol.

Can't wait to see you again on the warped tour! (maybe this time i will be able to talk to you for a change instead of babbleing like an idiot like that last couple of times lol)

I'd say great work, but clearly that's already been stated.

How did you make the Little Maggots picture?
Just curious, I'm always looking for new things to mess around with.

Gah!
The artwork is so
amazing.
The art for Decomposer is most definitely my favorite album art ever. ...which is probably why I stencil it on everything.

Vids for "Little Maggots" and "Salty Eyes"? Eep! I'm eager to see them.

Amazing. Those rats are really freaking scary. I think they gave me a nightmare... I was stuck in a cage for a rabbit. I could get in, but when I tried to get out, I was stuck... Bunnies aren't really that scary, but they are rodents, like rats, so it makes sense.

I love those pictures though. That first one is probably my favorite. It's really pretty.

Thank you so much for the wonderfully painted drum skin that now rides high on my bedroom wall. You guys played a great show at Nottingham last night. Thanks to Matt again for the drum sticks and set list and a huge thanks again for the painted crows on skin. Great artwork and best of luck for the video and future. see you soon.

Dear Shawn,
After I got the issue of AP magazine with your art work inside, I knew immediately that my art teacher would love your stuff. So I took it in, and of course, we "ooh"ed and "ahh"ed for a while, but now we're just curious. (ok so maybe more like I am, but anyways) What is it that inspires your work the most? I read that you do computer design too -which I have yet to work with- but everything I've seen of yours is so, beautifully nefarious... In every good way of course.

I would kill to be able to create the types of compositions you do, mood and all, but I'm currently stuck on barely two star portraits done with acrylic and months of time. (Beethoven is a beast after all...) Do you have ANY sort of tips, advice, direction... anything to help me go in the right direction. I mean, i have maybe a hundredth of the experience you have, but I want to learn so badly how to go about birthing something like that.

I type all this like you'll actually respond.... haha

Hey uhntiss,

Emilee here (lazily not logging in), just wanting to respond to your post, as I, for one, hate having my questions ignored! Not that anyone's posts are ignored - and in the next few weeks, this blog and the new Oxen website will be up, and more interactive than this site has been.

Shawn and I put the new Matches website up today - which is something of a preview of the artwork for A Band In Hope. New myspace is up too, featuring the new logo design. New imagery (photography, merch designs, etc) will be filtering through in the lead up to the release of the new album.

And while I'm at it - someone asked about Razia's Shadow too. I can only say that no release date is set.

So, you've asked of inspiration, tips, advice and direction. Our inspiration might come from any number of sources, or the combination of those - old National Geographic magazines in the case of the womb image, woodcut etchings from the beginning of last century in the case of the ABIH artwork, the Beatles in the case of the "Yankees In A Chip Shop" video. Then there are the things we love that you don't necessarily see in our art, but that definitely influence the work we create - art nouveau, graphic novels, contemporary illustration, the Pre-Raphaelites - and so on. Ideas might just come from conversations, or something seen when walking down the street.

I think the combination of Shawn's skills with the combination of mine often leads to interesting things. His background is more in traditional media, and he leans towards drawing things on paper, sculpting things from clay, and making enormous maggot cities out of - well, I won't give that away. My background is in photography, scientific photography and digital illustration, and while I love working with oil pastel, photoshop is my medium of choice. We share the traditional media and digital media tasks, but our different approaches and different solutions often reflect the skills that each individual is best at.

Then, observation is important, and I think too it's important to note whose work you like, why you like it, and why it is successful. Then take all of these elements, mix them around in your mind - and out comes a masterpiece, ha ha ha.

Above all, keep practising. You describe your portraits as 'two star' and imply that they're too time consuming - regardless of whether that's true or not, you're only ever going to get bettter at it the more time you spend! Maybe try not to dwell on what you can't do, but put all of your energy into working out and working on how to be better. And I also have to say - most artists spend more hours than you might imagine making their art. Don't be disheartened!

I hope this helps! All the best, and feel free to ask more questions if you like.

-Emilee-
